Abstract

This paper studies the use of Gigabit Ethernet in the context of Networked Control Systems on board of trains. One Ethernet network is used to connect the sensors, actuators and controllers in two adjacent train wagons. Furthermore, entertainment traffic is added to the control load. Using OPNET simulations, it is shown that the network can meet the real-time delay deadlines in presence of mixed traffic communication load. Furthermore, it is shown that the controller reliability of interconnected two-wagon network is much higher than that of an isolated single wagon network; one controller/server can carry the control information on board of two wagons.
