Abstract

Since its inception, Multimedia Information Retrieval (MIR) has made good steady progress, but has not been able to keep up with the speed at which needs for this technology evolved. We are at a very important juncture in the development of technology. MIR has potential to be more significant than the current search technology. Different components and tools are now available to make applications happen. In this paper, we first look at expectations from MIR and then take a look at the historical evolution of MIR. We then focus on what the emerging needs and research challenges for the MIR community are. Our emphasis is on important concepts and trends rather than an exhaustive survey. We particularly focus on research challenges to solve problems created by enormous increase in the multimedia data.
