This paper will report and analyse a case study on theutilisation of information systems by one of the largest globalmanufacturers of high-technology/electronic products. It will focuson their adoption of the services of an electronic marketplacecalled E2open and is based on 12 semistructured interviewsundertaken with both organisations. The paper will make threecontributions. It will firstly show how a new type oforganisational entity is emerging, which challenges the validity ofcurrent ontologies for the organisational actors within the supplychain. Secondly, it will consider how the connectivity betweenbuyer and supplier may be following a similar pattern to thetransportation of material goods between these entities, in that itis emerging as an activity that will increasingly be managed by athird party. Finally, it will show how the use of the applicationservice provider model of software provision is being used toenable the development of information systems which manage thesupply chain and not just the operations of individualorganisations. The extant theory will then be used to interpret thefindings, as well as eliciting from the findings what theimplications of this case are for further research in this fieldand for supply chain managers.
