Wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is fast becoming an option in the telecommunication area and consequently there is a renewed interest in developing broadband integrated service of digital network technologies namely ATM. In order to address ATM planning it is important to address both the physical network design as well as the logical network design. In this paper a cost effective ATM physical network design using Passive Optical Network has been suggested. On top of the physical network design, a logical network design with optimised bandwidth allocation using VP based approach has been suggested. This paper explores non-traditional optimisation technique specifically Genetic Algorithm (GA) to solve the physical as well as logical network design. The results thus obtained proves that GA based approach provides very good solution to ATM network planning problem.
