Word Sense Disambiguation is the core of many natural language processing (NLP) tasks. WSD is a significant technique and has been an interest and concern for the various researchers from the long time. WSD is considered as a successful technique in the last several years. Though success rate of WSD technique is quiet high it has certain limitation of unavailability of standardized evaluation system. The basic aim of the paper is to investigate the critical aspects of various WSD approaches. The paper will also provide a detail of the success rate of the various approaches and also their usage in various application areas.
