Abstract

Traditional approaches to programming education work well for conventional computer science students, but in the face of reduced enrollments and a severe underrepresentation of women and minorities, we must offer a variety of pedagogies to reach students who do not respond to this pedagogical approach. Research spanning several decades suggests that analytically less-experienced students may do well using a bricolage approach. This paper illustrates how to apply this approach to teaching students to program, and discusses its success in a course called, The Art and Science of Animation.
