Recently the spatiotemporal organization has been demonstrated in atrial fibrillation (AF), identifying localized sites of high-frequency activity during AF in humans with different distribution in paroxysmal and persistent AF. In this study bipolar intra-atrial registers from 28 patients (14 paroxysmal AF, and 14 persistent AF) were analyzed in order to find out regional differences in the organization in both types of arrhythmias. The wavelet variance decomposes the variance of a time series on a scale by scale basis and hence has considerable appeal when physical phenomena are analyzed in terms of variations operating over a range of different scales. The proposed methodology provides an additional approach to the understanding of the arrhythmia. The findings highlight a small relation between atrial waves in patients with persistent AF, and a higher organization along the atria in the paroxysmal group.
