In this paper, we analyze and develop hybrid finite impulse response (FIR) structures in applications to image enhancing. Three particular hybrid structures are observed: the FIR median hybrid (FMH), the moving average hybrid (MAH), and the smoothing FIR hybrid (FSH). All these structures have been developed for preserving a sharp edge and enhancing ultrasound images. It is shown that, among others, the FSH structure has a better performance in terms of the minimum mean square error and maximum signal-to-noise ratio in the enhanced image.
