In this paper, we suggest a unified reference model for implementing the Virtual Device Interface (VDI) level ISO computer graphics standards, Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) and Computer Graphics Interface (CGI). Most of previous works have taken a hierarchical approach. In contrast, we realize the mutual dependency between CGM and CGI. After analyzing the common parts of CGM and CGI, we design a set of sharable modules and clear interfaces between these modules. Through combining these modules, the functionalities of both CGM and CGI are provided. This approach reduces the cost of development and finally achieves the requirements of the VDI-level standards: modularity, flexibility, and portability. A prototype system is implemented based on our reference model.
