Basic characteristics of learning systems and their main weak points are defined. Some important existing problems have been analyzed and possible solutions are proposed here. Classification of different types of learning systems like Content Management Systems (CMS), Web Content Management Systems (WCMS), Learning Management Systems (LMS), Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS), and Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) is presented. Analysis of common used e-learning systems is conducted and set of minimal required functionalities is defined as a result from the survey of the set of existing systems. An abstract model of LCMS is proposed and recommendations for future research in the field of the collaborative and mobile learning are outlined.
