Keyword captions were originally used in video materials for learning second languages. Using keywords may have the potential for improving the quality of telecommunications as well as that of one-way media. We developed a prototype system to support intercultural telecommunications at videoconferences. The presenter writes keywords manually and shows the keyword cards, and viewers at remote sites see the keywords and their translations. Our prototype system recognizes handwritten Japanese characters in a video image at the server, and sends the recognition data to clients for enabling them to present their translations. Our system combined with a mainframe videoconferencing system is expected to become a tool for promoting productive discussions during online intercultural exchanges.
