Abstract

Design planning is an integral part of Physical Design Process for technology nodes of 65nm and below. As technology nodes shrink and designs get larger, design planning and design feasibility studies are rapidly becoming a bottleneck in physical design process. Large number of objects with incomplete constraints, library models and netlists pose a significant challenge to design planning and implementation. Challenges include modeling of physical effects, design feasibility and prototyping, and constraint generation for implementation tools with reasonable accuracy and runtimes. Lower power and variability aware design methodologies need to be considered while design planning. More of the designs today are implemented herarchically to handle large number of instances, and geographically dispersed design teams, further adding complexities to planning and implementation. This paper will present the role of design planning, challenges with respect to today's and future designs and potential solutions.
