Virtual currency is used widely in e-community and is usually managed in centralized form which is not suited for ad hoc networks. With the debt exchange protocol a lightweight currency is constructed in distributed form in ad hoc service network. Debt relationship need only be maintained between neighbors, so the currency mechanism can scale in large networks. But the debt network topology is so variable that only greedy routing or flooding can be used in such a setting. The geographic routing arithmetic is borrowed for effective routing. An analysis about file share application show that because neighbors interact repeatedly, a cooperative equilibrium can be attained, in which the debt relationship can be maintained spontaneous by neighbors according to their own interests.
