Abstract

Software cost estimation and effort estimation are crucial activities in software development, once they help to decide whether continues with a software development effort. Poor estimation is the cause of significant challenges in project management and in the software quality, therefore it is important the correct use of estimation models and techniques to avoid issues caused by poor estimation. Since early sixties, this subject has been researched which caused the creation of several estimation techniques. All techniques proved that can be applied to estimate software effort and cost, but none of them always provide an accurate estimate. For this reason, research has been done to improve the estimation accuracy. In this context, this paper reports from a survey about software effort estimation usage. The results indicate that when the techniques are used with estimation processes, projects have better results in terms of accuracy and the correct use of estimation techniques.
