An approach to automatically recover the damaged contours of the tablet calligraphy characters is proposed since most of the tablet images captured from carved stones were damaged. The preprocessing is performed to remove the noise, locate the character and obtain binary image without small holes within the character. The strokes and their contours are extracted respectively. The contours of strokes are recovered based on Fourier descriptors with fewer Fourier coefficients. Finally, the recovered strokes are combined together to form the calligraphy character. The encouraging experimental results show that the recovered calligraphy character is smooth and aesthetic.
