Abstract

In recent years, the emergence of online social network and other web applications is dramatically changing how rich media information is accessed and presented, how knowledge is processed and extracted, and how business can be conducted. Characteristics of the related data, users and computing environment influence the development, implementation and evaluation of media (e.g., text, audio, image and video) retrieval systems significantly. Designing effective search algorithms plays a critical role to satisfy user's information needs. In this article, we try to identify several potential research directions and discuss critical technical challenges on how to efficiently develop rich/multimedia retrieval and data management techniques from different respects. They include query formulation, recommendation systems, and index structure for query speed and scalability improvement.
