In the healthcare sector, the lack of assets visibility leads to a myriad of operations inefficiencies; affecting possibly patient safety. Radio frequency identification (RFID) represents a highly promising technology for material management in asset-intensive sectors such as healthcare. Even though RFID is proclaimed as a breakthrough technology for asset tracking; its adoption and implementation in healthcare have been hindered by many factors. This paper presents the results from a detailed longitudinal field research and documents the prevailing issues related to RFID implementation in a hospital setting.
