Abstract

The Internet has created a tremendous opportunity to access a large amount of products, services and information easily in a fast and easy way. At the same time, websites collect personal information (PI) from consumers, in order to fulfil their requests for certain products and services, to send them information, to customise the content and advertise the site etc. The collection of personal data raises some privacy issues that need to be examined. This paper, briefly explains the content of the most important privacy principles, posted since 1973, it makes a proposal on the "Legal and Ethical Website Guidelines" that should be applied when designing a website that collects PI and reports the results of a 100 websites survey that investigates the extent of the proposed guidelines implementation.
