Abstract

Natural and realistic video communication and collaboration across long distances is an essential requirement in the context of globalization. Against this background this paper presents a next generation system – the immersive meeting point- which bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology available from research laboratories and advanced prototype systems beeing close to the market. The aim is to provide immersive tele-presence and natural representation of all participants in a shared virtual meeting space to enhance quality of human-centred communication. This system is based on the principle of a shared virtual table environment, which guarantees correct eye contact and gesture reproduction. The current system design and details of the algorithms as well as the software concept are presented.
