Many researchers have focused on addressing a few problems of physical and virtual topology dependencies for designing survivable WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical networks. If dependencies between the physical topology and the virtual topology are not considered in restoration, it is not possible to achieve optimal restoration. The problem related to physical and virtual topology dependencies is NP-Hard (Nondeterministic Polynomial-Time), therefore, some principles incorporating topology dependencies are required to design a survivable WDM optical network. Consequently, we propose the HRM (Hybrid Restoration Method) principle that takes advantage of the efficient restoration resource utilization of the path-based restoration method and the fast restoration time of the link-based restoration method. The proposed restoration principles incorporating topology dependencies and the HRM principle can be exploited for the design of survivable WDM optical networks.
