Abstract

This commentary examines a number issues raised in Professor Brasseur's study. It considers the cognitive and cultural design issues of simple, presentation diagrams. Designer concerns and major design approaches are reviewed, with the conclusion that understandability, while important, is not the sole design consideration. This commentary examines how technology affordances, constraints, and in-the-world knowledge might account for Professor Brasseur's results. It discusses ways to improve the human-computer interface of diagramming software. Quality is examined from user, implementation, and cultural standpoints, and current poor graphical quality is explained from a market perspective. A final section reviews recent research and technological developments with the goal of predicting future trends in diagrams design.
