In a typical installation of the IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless personal area network (WPAN), a PAN coordinator performs energy detection (ED) scan as part of channel selection algorithm. However, one of the drawbacks of ED scan procedure is relatively its need of long time to be completed. To overcome this limitation, an adaptive ED scan (AEDS) scheme in order to minimize the time required to complete the ED scan of the IEEE 802.15.4 is proposed in this paper. The efficiency of the AEDS is validated by several experiments comparing the ED scan using the proposed scheme with the ED scan of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard.
