Abstract

Much of the diversity literature in the IT field has focused on the perspectives of women and racioethnic minorities. We expand this exploration by looking at perceptions of the unique challenges and barriers to advancement facing men in the IT workplace utilizing a cognitive lens and schema accuracy theory. In addition to evoking the unique challenges men perceive they face different from women, we also collected data from women regarding their perceptions of men's unique challenges. We found a minimal level of shared understanding occurring around interactions between the sexes (i.e., cross-gender interaction). These findings advance our understanding of the cognitive overlap (and lack thereof) regarding the perceptions of the unique challenges and barriers facing men in the IT field, and provide an initial step toward developing a shared understanding of the IT work environment.
