Motion-JPEG2000 (ISO15444-3) is a new intraframe-based video compression standard, which preserves best image quality after compression for use in high quality video systems like HDTV-cameras, medical imaging cameras or digital cinema cameras. This paper describes the advantages of the new standard in comparison to other standards, lists typical applications for the new standard and points out implementation challenges for electronics in real-time systems. A comparison of motion-JPEG2000 with MPEG-2 is presented and realization concepts with combined hardware/software solutions like FPGA and embedded microcontrollers are shown. The scalability of video in the new standard provides new opportunities for efficient postproduction and distribution channels in the video processing chain.
