Abstract

We proposed "Twist&Tap" as a new text entry method for TV remotes. The method uses a combination of operations that are easy for the body to remember: multi-tap of the four directional keys and five level twist control of the wrist holding the remote in either clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Experiments confirm that Twist&Tap offers increased text entry speed, and that many of the subjects could achieve text entry speed close to that of the more commonly used Multi-tap interface after just 3 hours of use, in the condition where the users could not see the remote. Twist&Tap is thus an easy-to-learn eyes-free interface.
