Abstract

Information systems (IS) technology plays a critical role in both the strategic and tactical operations of commercial banks. A study of several banks in the USA reveals various areas where support is needed for successful operation of IS. Three areas emerged from the study, namely (a) installation and updates, (b) problem solving, and (c) training and documentation. Training and documentation were the areas most lacking in support. Managers should strive for better support in this area from internal IS departments and from software vendors. A valid instrument is provided for measuring current IS support levels and for identifying and improving deficient areas.
