Abstract

The author describes the two major supporting elements of X.400, abstract syntax notation one (ASN.1) and remote operations (ROS). Their history, their impact upon open systems interconnection (OSI) to date, and speculation on their future importance are discussed. Built-in types, type constructors, subtype constructors, and tags for ASN.1 are presented. Error types, notation, bind and unbind operations, and realization of operations are discussed for ROS
