In the next ten years, data traffic from mobile devices is expected to grow at an exponential rate. Such growth, coupled with the ongoing advances in semiconductor technology and the demands of smartphone applications, makes managing the power and thermal conditions ever more challenging. In this paper, the various challenges of power and thermal management techniques/architecture for energy-efficient smartphones are reviewed, and design considerations for hardware and software power co-optimization are presented.
