Abstract

A review of fidelity developments has been conducted as part of a UK research programme studying the use of distributed simulation for military training systems. The purpose of the review was to identify current practices and to determine how the simulation community has matured in its understanding and employment of fidelity as a design concept. Notably it has been nine years since the SISO Fidelity Definition and Metrics Implementation Study Group delivered their final report. This paper presents some findings from the review, including definitions of relevant terms, fields of research and confounding issues. The process of identifying the fidelity required for each aspect of a new simulation may be described as 'fidelity analysis'. Frameworks and methods that were found in the literature are described and critiqued for their contribution to fidelity analysis for collective training systems. The paper concludes by reflecting on how collective training fidelity analysis approaches may be improved.
