Abstract

In order to address declining enrollment trends and lack of women in information technology (IT) careers, faculty and staff of a major Midwestern university developed two girls-only IT summer camps for middle school and high school students. The camps were developed in order to provide a long-term, broad-reaching solution to increase girls' and young women's interest in IT through a combination of activities, group work and interaction with mentors. This paper describes issues surrounding enrollment of women in IT programs, key elements of educational programs geared toward women in IT, and the development, implementation and future directions for the University's girls-only IT summer camp programs.
