Visual literacy, defined as the ability to create, comprehend, and communicate effectively using visual language, is based on an understanding of principles and concepts derived from gestalt psychology and other theories of visual perception, media studies, and visual communication design. Previously applied to the design of print media, environmental design, and fine art these principles and concepts can successfully be applied to the design of digital media, including interactive interface design and computer graphics.
