Many of the calculator functions that run on bitmapped workstations and personal computers are designed to simulate real hand-held calculators. Such a design allows rapid transfer of skill to an otherwise unfamiliar situation. However, such a design is naïve, in that simulated calculators inherit all of the problmes of real calculators and fail to exploit the opportunities for improvement that a graphics workstation provides.
