Abstract

A case is made for attempting to improve Pascal by reducing it in size and complexity, before additions are considered. Improvements are, in any case, best made by designing a completely new language. Some examples of possible improvements are given, based on observed deficiencies of Pascal from the point of view of teaching good programming techniques.
