This paper presents an extension to the relational model to represent indefinite/disjunctive and “maybe” information, in addition to the definite information, within relations. The semantics of the generalized relational algebraic operators are precisely defined. Answers to queries expressed as a combination of the extended relational operators may contain, in addition to definite, indefinite and maybe information that may be useful in many applications. Also discussed are certain optimization strategies and the effect of functional dependencies on updates to the database.
