The Scrimshaw system is an interactive design tool that supports the creation and editing of three-dimensional hierarchically detailed graphical objects. Scrimshaw is based on an object-oriented data model that permits the construction of arbitrary images. Object types are organized in an is-instance-of hierarchy that provides for inheritance. A locality mechanism adds flexibility by permitting minor deviations in typing without the creation of numerous subtypes. The functionality of Scrimshaw is illustrated by an extensive example of its object-editing capabilities.
