This paper shows how OSI architectural concept of service can be expressed using the specification language CCITT-SDL. Some general remarks about service specification using asynchronously communicating processes are followed by the introduction of a generalized form of the well-known time-sequence diagrams. This generalized form of time-sequence diagrams is is especially suitable for the semi-formal description of services rendered by asynchronously communicating service providers. Two examples, a Data Link and a Network service, show the application of the concepts developed here.
