Abstract

Although always present in text, word senseambiguity only recently became regarded as aproblem to information retrieval which waspotentially solvable. The growth of interest inword senses resulted from new directions taken indisambiguation research. This paper first outlinesthis research and surveys the resulting efforts ininformation retrieval. Although the majority ofattempts to improve retrieval effectiveness wereunsuccessful, much was learnt from the research. Most notably a notion of under what circumstancedisambiguation may prove of use to retrieval.
