Abstract

A decision-support system for the Fiber Deployment Plan problemis developed for the telephone cable network design in thetelecommunications industry. The system employs a GeographicInformation System (GIS) and uses combinatorial optimizationtechniques as its components. A mathematical combinatorialoptimization model is formulated for the problem and a heuristicsolution procedure is developed for the model. A GIS within theESRI Arc/INFO and ArcView environment is used to provide dataneeded to build the mathematical combinatorial optimizationmodel and to furnish an interface between the users andcomputers in data input and in solution result display. Combinatorial optimization techniques are used in the heuristicsolution procedure to find good solutions for the optimizationmodel. The developed decision-support system has been used toreal life problems and has resulted in tremendous improvementsin the telephone cable network design process. The user iscompletely satisfied with the performance of the system.
