For a fixed value α ∈ (0, 1), we introduce the relation α-sharpness and a measure of α-fuzziness of fuzzy sets. Then we propose an approximation of a fuzzy set A by its generalized α-cut Gα(A). A generalized α-cut of A is a special type of fuzzy set that is α-sharper than A and less α-sharp than the crisp approximation of A by its ordinary α-cut Aα. Attention will be given to the generalized α-cuts of fuzzy numbers.
