Abstract

Applications of operators of α-contrast modification of fuzzy sets to fuzzy numbers are studied. It is shown that for a fuzzy number A and for α ∈ (0, 1) an α-upper bound and an α-lower bound of A can be created. Cardinality of the α-boundary region will be called α-flexibility of A . Relationship among α-bounds, strong α-bounds and "ultimate" α-bounds of A is discussed. When α-bounds are trapezoidal fuzzy numbers then α-flexibility of A can be used to assess α-roughness of approximation of A in the knowledge base consisting of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers.
