This article traces the evolution of army wearable computers from the early days of preliminary prototypes in the 1990s, to the first demonstration Soldier's Computer as part of the Soldier Integrated Protective Ensemble program, to the current Land Warrior program and future systems under various research programs. The Land Warrior computer-radio-GPS unit builds on the basic concept of the original system and goes far beyond the early prototypes in both performance and functionality, with enormous reductions in size and weight over the last few years. As a result of lessons learned and new requirements, the Army is investigating enhancements to the current Land Warrior system under various research programs. As the Army evolves and moves toward the future, wearable computing platforms will be developed under the Army's concept of Objective Force Warrior.
