On the Web, content providers can store textual information as HTML or XML files, or they can deploy it from databases, which provide several advantages, including support for transactions, better scalability, replication, indices, and constraint rules. However, databases often lack customizable interfaces for content maintenance. Vendors such as Oracle, Microsoft, and IBM distribute popular database management tools that provide a high degree of integration, but such database-specific tools often require proprietary client software and fail to support customized user interface requirements.
