Abstract

Computer graphics and real-image compositing techniques have been widely used in various ways in television programs and movies. Originally, computer graphics technology was based on video processing methods. These two different cultures have now merged into a new technology. The virtual camera method presented here is intended to integrate the computer graphics technique and the real-time video processing technique to make a new type of virtual studio. Based on this method, the NHK Labs have developed several image compositing systems. This article begins with an overview of image compositing technology to clarify the issues, followed by a description of the virtual camera method and introduction of some systems that combine computer graphics and video processing technology. Finally, the author discusses future directions and possibilities not only for image compositing but also for developing sophisticated systems for editing and producing television programs.
