Abstract

We propose a general, flexible, and powerful architecture to build emotional agents, that is, software agents that embed artificial emotions. By artificial emotions we mean information and computations achieving functionalities that relate to conveying emotions to humans, thus allowing more effective, stimulating, and natural interactions between humans and agents. An emotional agent also possesses rational knowledge and reactive capabilities, and is able to interact with the external world, including other agents. We are successfully employing our architecture in various real-world multimedia-multimodal systems, for example in Città dei Bambini (Children's City), a permanent science exhibition (exploratorium) in Genoa (Italy), where children can learn by playing. We describe an instantiation of our architecture, namely the emotional agent that we designed and implemented for a navigating and speaking robot which acts as a guide in Città dei Bambini.
