WISE is a software tool developed at AT&T Bell Laboratories to design indoor and microcell wireless systems. It includes a 3D ray-tracing propagation model, algorithms for computational geometry and optimization, and a specialized user interface that links them together. Given building data and system parameters, sophisticated and extremely fast geometric algorithms are used to calculate measures of radio-signal performance in user-specified regions. A variant of the Nelder-Mead direct search optimization method can be invoked to find base-station transceiver locations that maximize the area over which an adjustable performance criterion is satisfied. The user interface in WISE displays multiple views of the relevant structures, depicts color-scaled signal strength, and allows flexible interactive control over parameters and system configuration. WISE has been applied to a wide variety of buildings, and its predictions have been validated with measurements. WISE runs on Unix systems with X-Windows and (in a preliminary form) on PCs under Microsoft Windows.
