Mine plans and sections have been the traditional method by which three-dimensional information is stored and viewed. However, these are only two-dimensional. We show that using VRML to model this information has led to a new and interactive method of data visualization. We chose a local mine as a case study, due mainly to the amount of coordinate information available and also because no one has created a complete 3D image of the mine. This article outlines the methods employed in data collection and editing, conversion to VRML, and solutions to some of the problems encountered during construction of the model. We conclude with a section on how to access the model and future enhancements likely to be forthcoming.
