Conformance testing for VRML provides a means for determining if an implementation satisfies the requirements and specifications of the standard. NIST is developing a combination of testing tools to systematically address some of the problems posed by the nature of testing 3D graphics. These tools include a reference parser, Viper, and a collection of VRML test worlds and associated Java and ECMAScript code, deemed the VRML Test Suite, that test the VRML built-in nodes, VRML extensible components, and the base execution model. Finally, the true dynamic nature of VRML is tested using automatic test generation techniques built through extension of the Viper source code. This collection of tools incorporates several innovative features in order to address the difficulties of testing 3D graphics. In addition, we address using the Web as a vehicle for delivering the tools. This article discusses the test development strategy and design issues in developing and delivering these testing tools.
