Flatbed scanners are offered for less that $100 these days. Due to their depth of focus, they work not only for scanning printed paper, but also for scanning small objects. Nonparallel optics make it possible to create stereoscopic images of small objects with flatbed scanners. This article gives an in-depth presentation of the method. Multiple examples let the reader judge the high quality and the particular properties of the stereoscopic images made in this way. Finally, possible accessories are described that permit using flatbed scanners on a routine basis, including in hobbies and professional applications. Currently, work is under way to specify, design, and build the first prototypes.
