Abstract

The quality and realism of 3D models obtained with advanced 3D scanners are spectacular. And so are the efforts required for producing such models. The challenge now is in making 3D scanning practical. 3D scanners will bloom as soon as digitizing a simple object becomes easier than modeling it in a 3D editor. Digitizing should include color texture mapping and capturing complete geometry from all directions. Taking the point of view of a 3D scanner developer, we review different techniques of 3D digitizing. We briefly compare existing systems, giving special consideration to active optical triangulation-based scanners. Using the Galatea scanner of MetaCreations as an example, we explain engineering solutions involved in the design
