This paper describes the architecture of the Pentium processor and provides a performance analysis of Pentium based systems. The paper presents the utilization of different architectural features of the Pentium processor under different software environments. This information aims to contribute to a better understanding of the design tradeoffs and the potential causes of performance bottle-necks. We provide the performance analysis from the CPI (cycles per instruction) point of view. We present a breakdown of the CPI into its basic constituents and examine the effects of different operating systems, such as Windows 3.1, Windows NT, Unix, and different applications on the CPI. The breakdown of the CPI indicates where the application spends its time while being executed.
